"at least 24 hours notice..."

funny story. not so funny when it happened at 10:19 this morning though. it left me shaking and defensive.

i had a leisure morning, woke up late, made coffee and eggs. did the dishes. read some of my book, listened to the morning show on bbc radio solent. weather prediction, sunny. beach day!

i'm brushing my teeth and climbing into my swimsuit when there's a knock at my door. confused, i ignore it for a millisec thinking maybe it's my squirrel lady of a neighbour on the other side when my door opens! the voice on the other side says, "allan and bath lettings". i dash into my kitchen (away from the hallway) with a mouth full of toothpaste and shout, "um, i'm changing, give me second" as i pull up the straps of my swimsuit, and spit out the paste.

hands shaking, i'm thinking what the f is going on? this is my apartment for goodness sake! throwing on some jeans and a cardi, i open the door with my toothbrush in hand and the lettings guy explains that he's here to show my flat. i open the door further and there's a couple behind him. great. an audience.

i explain to him that i hadn't received any notification of a viewing this morning. the letting's guy says that it was confirmed and i told him, no it wasn't because i had no phone call or written notice in the post. the potential tenant then had the nerve to say, "well, the lettings people said it was all arranged for a ten am viewing." sounding like a broken record i repeated myself, "well, obviously not or i wouldn't have been so surprised and i wouldn't have been here to interfere with your viewing." i then said i would call my property manager to find out what went wrong. i told them i have no problem with them viewing the flat, but i need to be notified. i'm thinking to myself, geez louise people, i was just naked when you opened my front door!!! doesn't that count for something?!!? this is my f'in home people!!!

closing the door, with shaking hands i found my mobile and called my property manager. leaving a detailed message  i requested a call back. when we spoke half an hour later, she explained she is separate from the lettings department and she agreed it was wrong that i had no notification. to have her help understand the seriousness i said, "i had a toothbrush in my hand with a mouthfull of toothpaste...and i was naked when he opened my door. that's not fair."

again, funny story now...but not so funny in the moment.

so, how was your morning?

ha! That is terrible! Well, it was very gracious of you to still let them in though, Hayles. While not as bad, I had a similar caught off guard moment this morning when I was half dressed and the fire alarm in my building decides to go off. I quickly put something on, was looking for my shoes and keys when it stopped. I waited a minute, heard nothing else, smelled no smoke, so decided it was safe to continue getting ready in the manner in which I am used to. Which is: Lesurely. I did think for a split second when I first heard the alarm of running outside in my skivvies, but given my neighbourhood figured that wouldn't be so smart. of coursr, I might have been able to make some easy money that way.

Glad you defended yourself :)

oh no! blasted fire alarms!!!!

actually, correction: i sent them packing. i didn't let them in. it's the principle of it all. that's why there's this thing called a "contract". i'm calling the lettings department tomorrow to ask them who confirmed with me the 10am viewing. (knowing full well, no one contacted me). what a bunch of stupid heads.

happy happy joy joy!

A lot better than yours for sure!!
Way to stand your ground! So, have they made a proper appointment with you yet to see the flat?

yeah, i called back friday and spoke to the lettings department who apologised for the incident and then asked, "so, how much notice do you need?"....i'm like, "what is says in the contract we both agreed to, 24 hours notice." thank you very much. then a phone call half an hour later with a request for a viewing for monday just past. result!
