before i make my way to the train station at the end of my day, i visit the loo.
what. it is what it is.
and, because i'm sensory, i always have to take my ring off when it comes time to wash my hands. something about the soap getting in between the ring and my finger and staying there all soapy and then i'll have to take it off anyway to rinse because i'm sensory and i can't stand the feeling of it. and it won't get properly dried because the ring gets in the way and we can't have that.
yes, i'm weird.
yesterday was no different, only this time i was distracted and walked away without putting the ring back on. i can't be on my game all the time, people. i've already accepted the fact that my wedding ring is going to need to be bought in bulk.
i realised what i had done when i entered the train station because something didn't feel right. sensory alert. i looked at my left hand and thought...frig. i resolved myself to the fact that it was gone, never to be reunited again. i've had this ring since i started child welfare. i remember because it was a big purchase (as far as a ring is concerned) and i was freshly graduated and in awe of making some serious cash. this ring, along with my steve madden boots, are symbolic for that reason.
so, this morning i thought, what the heck, let's give lost and found a go. nothing. alright. the ring's gone. i'm okay with it. i took it as a sign of a season to lay to rest. they'll be other rings. doesn't matter that this was the ring that saved my finger from being smashed in the van sliding door during that girls getaway vacaa in maine that one summer and left a permanent dent in the band, but served as a good memory of a good time with the girls.
in preparation to leave the office this evening, i stayed true to my routine and said hello to the loo again. sometimes when i work late, the cleaning lady's in there. we chat. it's usually about the weather or how quickly the week is flying by. she's a super sweet, petite older lady. she calls me, love and bids me a goodnight and i the same.
i try her and ask if she knows anything about the ring. it's a long shot.
she knows. she picked it up and gave it to some guy, steve who was going to put it in lost and found. i couldn't believe it. i'm laughing inside. i'm stunned. she tells me where i can find steve.
i open the door to the hallway and there's a man. i say, hi...are you, steve?
depends he says as he looks me in the eye.
smart ass. aha.
he has the ring. he has it. he takes me to his office and disappears for a few minutes. he comes back and produces...my ring.
the end.
