conversation with a foster parent at five o'clock on a friday. yes, i know, i have no life to be working so late on a friday evening. and, just for effect, i'm sitting in my car...on the side of the road, lost.
ring ring..."hi (insert foster parent's name here), it's hayley. i've been driving up and down (insert road name here) and i know you live on this road, but can you tell where your house is?
foster parent - "oh, it's (insert house name here)."
me - "yes, i know that, but where is your house? what is your house number?"
foster parent - "oh, we don't have a number. it's (insert house name here)."
me - "no number. hmm, okay. so, how do i find (insert house name here)?"
it should be noted that at this point in the conversation i am about to scream "what is wrong with this effin' country!?!??!?!?!??!? and that they don't even have freakin' house numbers!?!?!??! how does anyone every find anything in this place?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
but instead, because i'm a professional and because i've been blessed with copious amounts of patience, i bit my tongue and said,
me - "okay, how about some landmarks. that might be helpful."
to which she replied,
foster parent - "it's past the cemetery, and on the right hand side. there's a red brick stone wall out front and a wrought iron gate. if you're driving and you notice all the houses are gone and it's turning into more forest-type land, you've gone too far."
are you freaking kidding me. do you know how many "stone walls" and "wrought iron gates" exist in this country? that's like...every property in the rural countryside.
and after all that, back at my flat, i walked down to the water and stared blankly at the sea for half an hour and watched the tide get closer and closer to where i was sitting. i felt better after that.

I bet you were just sitting there waiting for the tide to take you away and back to Canada, EH?
